About the Vaccine
WHAT DOES THIS VACCINE PREVENT?
This vaccine prevents Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), which is the most common sexually transmitted disease worldwide. This disease does not present symptoms, which results in high rates of transmission and places HPV among the main causes of cervical, anal, penile and oropharyngeal (throat) cancer.
WHICH PUBLIC AND AGE IS THE VACCINE RECOMMENDED FOR?
It is recommended for girls and women aged 9 to 45 and boys and men aged 9 to 26. The vaccine is included in the Brazilian Public Health System (SUS) vaccination calendar for children and adolescents.
HOW MANY DOSES ARE PART OF THE COMPLETE HPV VACCINATION SCHEDULE?
The vaccination schedule for adults provides for three doses of the vaccine (with intervals of 2 and 6 months from the 1st dose).
For children and adolescents, consult SUS guidance.
IS THE VACCINE SAFE FOR ADULT WOMEN?
Yes. There is no record of serious adverse events related to vaccination in any age group. Several regulatory agencies around the world evaluate its safety, and existing HPV vaccines confirm, in practice, an excellent safety profile, already documented in initial studies.
I HAVE/ALREADY HAD THE HPV VIRUS. CAN I GET VACCINATED?
Yes! Vaccination is recommended for these cases as well.
Even for women who have already had high-grade precursor lesions and have been treated, several studies have shown that vaccination after treatment can reduce recurrences. It is known that women who developed HPV lesions have cofactors that facilitate viral action and that these cofactors tend to remain present and can result in pathologies in other locations. Thus, in theory, women with precursor lesions are at greater risk for other related lesions and vaccination would therefore have a more precise indication
